TREND ALERT: HATS – Danni Truter, NYC

The ‘it’ bag? The ‘must-have’ shoe? Forget it! 2013 is bringing attention to what’s on our heads and hats have never been hotter! Making a mainstream comeback, NYC is currently loving them, especially on those ‘bad hair’ days! Featuring heavily on the RTW Spring 2013 runways of Alexander McQueen, Saint Laurent, DKNY and Ralph Lauren, stores in New York are fully embracing the trend and traditional milliners have never been happier.

Looking a lot like Christmas – Danni Truter, NYC

Like Santa on steroids, the Christmas cheer has taken over NYC with a vengeance. Pine trees line every street corner, fairy lights twinkle all night long and you can hear Christmas carols echoing around every corner. As a white Christmas virgin, I am completely embracing the traditions and sights of this magical Winter Wonderland (despite eagerly still waiting for the snow to fall). As our gift lists grow and everyone fights the gauntlet of the ‘Christmas shopping crowds’ the big department stores make sure they put on a show to ensure this traumatic shopping experience doesn’t steal your festive spirit. No one wants a scrooge.

TREND ALERT: Split personality – Contrast Sleeves – Danni Truter, NYC

When things are different, it keeps life interesting! As the temperature drops in NYC the outerwear is taking a twist on the norm with jackets and coats heavily trending contrast sleeves. Playing a game of fabric match making, designs range from a blend of materials, such as wool and leather, to bold colour combos. The output: a look that will add instant edge to winter style.

The history of this city, through its decades of fashion has created a gold mine of vintage finds. Just make sure you’ve got the dedication, sorting through racks and racks, isn’t for the impatient! Here are just a few places worth a visit whenever in NYC…

BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG CITY…they weren’t kidding – Danni Truter, NYC

With a heavy case of serious jet lag, my best friend/travelling partner-in-crime, Anna and I made our way to the neon-overload that is Times Square. Being our first night in NYC, it was a case of “we actually made it” and “OMFG…this place is overwhelming”. If you block out the millions of other tourists around you, Times Square at night, is a beautiful thing. Like a bug memorized by the bright lights, it was at this moment it hit me… I now live in one of the biggest and greatest cities in the world! Making the move to NYC was something I had thought about for a while. Even while working for some of the most talented people and brands in Australia, I wanted to challenge myself and be part of the fashion industry in New York. After travelling around the US of A for a month, I have now set up ‘home’ in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

Creative Brooklynites Hang out in Containers – NYC, Ghada Vanderpool.

In the heart of Downtown Brooklyn a laid back and creative space reopened over Easter, just in time for spring. Brooklynites and New Yorkers farther afield are happy to see the return of the 7 day a week market that houses everything from children's stores, to cupcake shops and jewelry stores in salvaged shipping containers. Grabbing a coffee and a Steak and Cheese Pie from Down Under Bakery Pies (yes, authentic Australian and New Zealand pies right here in New York!) while browsing through hand knitted eternity scarves and crafted rings all housed in containers can only happen in New York.

One City, One Perfume – New York in a Bottle, Ghada Vanderpool

Renowned parfumier Gerald Ghislain is further expanding the perfume line The Scent of Departure which will now include New York. This inventive line will evoke memories of cities visited in the past or daydreams of exotic cities to travel to in the future. A long sleek bottle with a a checked baggage tag as its unique design feature, these are sure to make great gifts for the traveler in your life ($45). One can only imagine what New York in a bottle will smell like. Maybe the sweet smell of cranberry juice and lime of a Cosmopolitan cocktail or the fragrant and green smell of Central Park? I can only hope that it won't smell like the New York Subway.

Spring Nail Trends – NYC, Ghada Vanderpool

In New York we have no reason not to have fantastic manicures and pedicures. Many salons and spas will get your nails tip top for less than $10 from Monday to Wednesday and the cost, though slightly higher, is not much more on the weekends. But there are those of us who revel in creating our own nail art – from ombre nails, to pastel shades for spring, and art representing NYC, New York ladies are doing it all. My fave unassuming twist on an old classic is the reverse french manicure also known as the half moon manicure. Easy to do, eye-catching and makes great use of opposite colored polishes.

Eco-Fashion at Brooklyn Fashion Week{end} – NYC, Ghada Vanderpool

Manhattan has long been known as the hub of New York fashion, but Brooklyn is definitely an up and coming force within New York creating its own edgy and contemporary style. As the borough solidifies its name as the Creative Capital of the East Coast, it is fitting that it would have it's own Fashion Week{end}. The ready-to-wear show "B fashion, B part of it" had a focus on eco-friendly designers as seen in Friday's Smarter Clothing. Brooklyn's fashion event of the year gave local designer's a chance to showcase their Fall/Winter 2012 Collection at the hip creative space Industry City in Sunset Park.

5 Minutes with Ghada Vanderpool, our new NYC Insider

When the skies open up in New York, it can really pour! We have to be prepared to flag a yellow cab down or run to catch the subway. Rain boots are functional, but also pretty and girly in shiny purples, yellows, reds and greens. Even if its yuck outside, we still look good.
